Chapter 6

Big problem with declaring war against a ghost is that you can’t actually declare war against a ghost. You sort of need to be able to hit them, or fight them, and not be batting away erasers like they were irate hornets.

Which was why I was still wrestling with my shirt three periods later, my fingers aching after having held the thing together for so long. I shuffled my way into the lunchroom, plunging myself into the wall of people.

Little mercies: I still hadn’t gotten a pie in the face.

“Here, I have a safety pin in my backpack,” Howl said looking through the messy bag.

“What are you a Boy Scout?” I laughed, sinking into our usual table with a sigh. “Always prepared?”

He paused and glared up at me, holding the pin out. “Does this seem like something a Boy Scout would carry around to you?”

The safety pin was as big as his finger, and I wasn’t sure if it was covered in rust or blood, but it didn’t matter. It’d do the trick for now.

“Not unless said Boy Scout was a murderer,” I said, grabbing the frightening thing. “But the second it flies away and stabs someone, I’m calling it a day. I’ll go shirtless in the Keep and not have to worry about all this.”

“Ooh, shirtless in the Keep, count me in!” Tommy said as he plopped himself onto the other side of the table and earned himself a scowl from Scarlet, who quickly changed seats. She knew exactly who was under his disguise and wanted no part of it—my mate or not.

Demons weren’t allowed on the grounds of Bloodwood Academy, so he had to disguise himself and his scent in order to be around me if he wanted to.

He’d chosen a particularly good-looking guy to mimic. Soft skin and dark black hair with blonde highlights. My demon looked like the star football player at my old high school.

But I wasn’t about to tell anyone here that.

“Stick around and I’m sure you’ll get a show none-the-less,” I sighed and affixed my shirt back together, thankfully giving my fingers a break. Shirt fixed, I promptly slammed my head into the Formica surface, sloshing the soup that Finn had brought me.

“It hasn’t been that bad, has it?” Finn asked, sopping up the soup spill as he slid into the seat beside me and planted a kiss on my temple. “I mean, I’ve heard the stories…”

He didn’t have to make his slow observation of my barely concealed chest, but he did.

“Oh, it has been that bad.” I stabbed my soup like I was cutting a steak, splashing more liquid all over the place. “I’m sure everyone knows by now?”

“Word travels fast,” Scarlet said, still eyeing Tommy like he was going to jump her. “Plus, everyone waits all year for these things, the first haunting is like a gold mine and you are lucky number one. Just enjoy it.”

“I will not enjoy it!” I snapped, slamming my hands on the table and spilling even more of my dwindling soup.
